Workspace Editor & Collaboration

Format descriptions and comments with the rich-text editor, and work on an item's description at the same time as your teammates.

The same rich-text editor appears wherever you write in DevStride: item and workstream descriptions, comments, the quick-add dialog, and more. A work item's Description tab adds real-time collaboration on top, so two people opening the same item see each other and each other's draft.

Other things the editor does

  • @Mentions — type @ and a name to mention a teammate; they are notified.
  • Inline images — drag an image from your desktop into the editor; drag the handle to resize.
  • Inline video — drag a video in; it is also listed on the item's Assets tab.
  • Markdown shortcuts — # for a heading, - for a bullet, 1. for a numbered list, [ ] for a checklist, all followed by a space.

Real-time collaboration on descriptions

Open a work item's Description and DevStride shows who else has it open and keeps everyone's view in sync. You need edit (update) permission on the item to change the description; others can still open it and appear as viewers.

Who is here

A banner under the editor appears when at least one other person has the item open. It shows up to three avatars (then +N) and a status:

  • Jane is editing..., Jane and Sam are editing..., Jane and 3 others are editing...
  • Jane is viewing, Jane and Sam are viewing, Jane and 3 others are viewing

Someone who stops typing for about a minute is shown as viewing again.

Drafts

As you type, your changes are kept as a draft:

  • The draft is broadcast live to everyone else viewing the item, and re-sent to anyone who opens it mid-edit, so they see your in-progress text rather than the last saved version.
  • The draft is also kept in your browser, so a reload or navigating away does not lose it.

Coming back to an unsaved draft

Reopen an item where you left unsaved changes and DevStride restores the draft and returns you to edit mode. When your draft no longer matches the saved description, or you try to save over a version someone else saved after you started, the Unsaved Draft Found dialog shows both side by side: pick Saved Description or your draft and click Use Selected, or Discard Draft. Recovered drafts are kept for a limited time, then cleaned up.
