AI Assistant

Ask DevStride how-to questions from the assistant button, get answers drawn from this documentation with links to the pages used, and control the assistant for your organization.

The AI Assistant answers how-to questions about DevStride while you work. Ask it something like How do I create a sprint cycle for my team? and it searches this documentation site, writes a short answer, and lists the pages it used so you can read further.

Open the assistant

Click the round assistant button in the lower-right corner of any page. The assistant opens docked along the bottom of the window. Use the buttons in its title bar to:

  • Float it as a separate window you can move around the page.
  • Expand it to full screen.
  • Close it. The button stays in the corner.

DevStride remembers the layout you chose and reopens the assistant the same way next time.

If you don't see the button, your organization has switched the assistant off, or your role doesn't include Use Ai Assistant. Ask an organization admin.

Ask a question

  1. Type your question in the box at the bottom and press Enter.
  2. The assistant shows what it is doing ("Finding relevant documentation…") and then writes its answer as it goes.
  3. Under the answer, Sources links to each documentation page the answer came from.

Ask a follow-up in the same conversation and the assistant keeps the earlier questions in mind. To stop an answer part-way, click Stop. If an answer fails, you can retry it.

The assistant answers from docs.devstride.com. When the documentation doesn't cover something, it says so rather than guessing.

Conversations

The Conversations list on the left of the assistant keeps your earlier chats. Each is named after its first question.

  • Click New chat to start a fresh conversation.
  • Click a conversation to reopen it.
  • Use the pencil to rename a conversation, or the bin to delete it.

Your conversations are private to you.

Turn the assistant on or off for your organization

The assistant is on for every organization by default. An admin manages it from Settings → AI Assistants:

SettingWhat it does
Enable the AI Assistant for this organizationOff hides the assistant button for everyone in the organization, and nothing is sent to any model provider.
What the assistant may useChoose the sources the assistant may draw on: Documentation (docs.devstride.com), DevStride data (your items, boards and people) and GitHub (linked repositories). GitHub support arrives in a later release; the choice applies from then.
Models members may chooseLimit which AI models members can pick. Leave it empty to allow every free model.

Changes apply as soon as you switch them.

Who can do what

Three permissions in the AI Assistant group of Roles & Permissions govern the assistant:

PermissionWhat it grantsMemberAdmin
Use Ai AssistantOpen the AI Assistant and chat with it.yesyes
Manage Ai AssistantSwitch the assistant on or off and choose which sources and models it may use. Requires the Settings module.noyes
View Ai UsageSee AI Assistant usage and cost for the organization. Requires the Settings module.noyes

Every role that existed when the assistant launched received Use Ai Assistant. Remove it from a role to hide the assistant from that role's members while leaving it on for everyone else.

Your data

Conversations are processed by OpenAI, L.L.C. and Anthropic, PBC as DevStride sub-processors. The text of a message, and the context your organization allows, go to the chosen model's provider only while a member is chatting. Nothing is sent while the assistant is switched off.
